Secrets in Stepfamilies

The best way to make trusting and warm relationships in your family is through honest and clear communication. However, when something in your past made you feel frightened, ashamed, or sad, it is tempting to avoid talking about it, and this is how a family secret develops. This leaflet talks about some of the secrets that stepfamilies might have, including secrets regarding a child's paternity. It also provides some advice on how you might tell a secret.

Changing a Family Name

Stepfamilies are formed through the blending of different families, and as a result there may be many different surnames in a stepfamily. For some, agreeing to have the same surname can be the first step in building a closer family relationship.  This leaflet provides some guidance on what you need to do if you decide you want to change a family name.

Grandparents and Stepfamilies

A stepfamily has many challenges that other families do not have to deal with. In particular, stepfamilies have to balance and negotiate the different traditions, values, and emotional needs that each family brings to the new one.  However, what is often not appreciated is the impact a new stepfamily can have on the extended family. This leaflet focuses on grandparents in particular, and the challenges that they might face as members of a new or established stepfamily.
