WHAT IS A STEPFAMILY?

A stepfamily is formed when an adult with a child or children forms a new couple relationship. This may be as a result of death, a divorce, or a separation. In every case new relationships are built on the loss of something before.

For some, being a member of a new stepfamily can be a very rewarding and positive experience.  For example, children may find that a new extended family provides a whole set of new playmates, and for some stepparents who do not have children of their own, becoming part of a ready-made family can be a very enriching experience.  However, at times being in a stepfamily can also be difficult for both adults and children.

Problems may arise at different stages for everyone. It’s not unusual for a child who seemed to have accepted the new situation to suddenly find things difficult.   Something unrelated to the stepfamily may be causing the problem, such as exams, puberty, or problems with friends.  However, stepfamilies have to deal with a range of issues that other families do not have to consider.  Outlined below are the some of the issues that callers to our helpline have needed some support with.
